Oral L-Glutathione (Reduced Glutathione or GSH) increases the body's ability to produce glutathione. When additional glutathione is administered to the liver, it is ideally absorbed into the bloodstream, where it is converted to natural glutathione and exported to other cells.
Because glutathione is made up of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamine, and glycine, an increase in glutathione lightens skin. Cysteine is the main component, and high levels of cysteine in the body have been shown to reduce overall melanin production in the body by inhibiting tyrosinase (an enzyme that stimulates melanin production) and switching the metabolic pathway of melanin from synthesising dark pigmented melanin (eumelanin) to producing light pigmented melanin (phaeomelanin). The outcome is a natural and progressive change from lighter-to-lighter skin tones.
